Life Coaching

Life Coaching is a mentoring relationship, not therapy, that focuses on practical goal setting, life skills and open, honest communication. The ultimate purpose of Life Coaching is to produce self-awareness and confidence in a teen so they can achieve their own unique social, academic, professional and other personal goals. I act as a confidant and guide through that process, and also coordinate with parents to help facilitate the growth of their teen, elicit open communication and improve family relationships. Life Coaching topics include, but are certainly not limited to:

  • Finding purpose and direction in life

  • Goal setting and attainment

  • Emotional regulation

  • Overcoming social challenges

  • Building positive personal and family relationships

  • Tackling high-stakes school environments

  • Long-term planning and success

  • Promoting a strong work ethic

  • Career counseling

  • Healthy habits

  • Financial literacy

  • Life skills

Standard sessions last one hour and include an additional 20 minute parent follow-up. Sessions are offered in-person and virtually. Personalized programs are also available.

Additional benefits of Life Coaching & Academic Counseling:

While most parents employ life coaching or academic counseling services to address a specific set of needs, the additional benefits can often be as meaningful, if not more so. These include a more comfortable home and family life, a closer relationship with your son or daughter, and a greater sense of understanding between parent and child. Teens and young adults still in school often experience overall academic improvement, and those of all ages tend see an increased awareness of their own personal, educational and career goals and the steps they must take to achieve them.

Testimonials

We’ve known Matt Douglas for a long time.  Years ago, he was my son’s counselor at camp and my son just loved him (as did the other kids!)  A year later my son needed math tutoring and asked if Matt could be hired as his tutor.  Matt proved to be the perfect balance between friend and task master, keeping my son engaged, but not falling for his excuses.

Their tutoring relationship continued for several years, until Matt moved to the West Coast.  And they have continued to keep in touch after he moved through occasional messages and texts.  When Matt told me about his coaching business, I was excited, because I knew he would be great at it, and that my son could really use his help.  However, I wasn’t sure how beneficial it would be for my son to have sessions with him long distance.  But it has turned out to be very successful!  They talk via video chat; my son finds a spot in our house where he is comfortable and they talk face to face easily.

Matt has helped my son a great deal through coaching.  Matt helps him set goals and talk through how to achieve them and how to regroup when things don’t go as well as hoped.  He helps him think through problems and helps keep him focused when things get cloudy.   I would recommend Matt to anyone who’ll listen!

I can’t thank Matt enough for his help over the past few years. Taking AP classes can be really challenging but Matt is able to explain the material in a way that is easy to understand and interesting! Always look forward to learning new material with him!

We have noticed nothing but steady upward progress since Matt began mentoring our son. The transition from 8th to 9th was difficult both academically and emotionally. A friend recommended Matt to us and I’m so happy and grateful we met Matt and scheduled a meeting. Our son liked Matt immediately and began weekly sessions. They would talk together and after their session Matt would talk to my husband and I. My son trusts and looks up to Matt. His grades are up and his head is in a great place. He’s making friends and attempting to be more social. Because of his background, Matt can help him with personal and academic situations. Hiring Matt has been the most successful support for our son and the family recommends him wholeheartedly!

My boys are comfortable with Matt because they value his wisdom and kindness. They know he worked with their sister and recognize that her acceptance letters and good scores were because of his guidance.

I want to take a moment to say a few things about Matt Douglas. When I was searching for someone to work with my teen son I knew in my mind the type of person I thought would be a good it. Matt was that person. It became apparent that Matt was able to really relate with my son. He and my son quickly built a very nice professional relationship and I could tell me son actually looked forward to meeting with Matt. I absolutely recommend him, especially working with teens.
